American Mahjong Racks, Pushers and Mats: A Buying Checklist

For a comfortable American Mahjong table, plan on a tile set, four racks, two dice, and the current official card used by your group. Pushers make moving the walls easier; a mat is a comfort accessory rather than a substitute for the essential game equipment. Before buying a matching bundle, check what you already own and whether each accessory fits your tiles.

This guide focuses on choosing compatible accessories. For building walls and dealing, use our step-by-step American Mahjong setup guide.

Racks: start with fit, not color

A rack keeps your concealed tiles organized and provides a place to display exposures. For a four-player table, plan on one rack per player. Look for a stable base, a comfortable viewing angle, and enough usable space for your tiles.

Do not assume every product labeled “standard” has the same dimensions. Ask for the usable rack length and check how your tile width and thickness fit the groove. A decorative end cap or attached counter can reduce usable space even when two racks have the same outside length.

Practical example: our Pink Four-Layer tiles measure 32 × 24 × 16 mm. Share those measurements with an accessory seller rather than relying on a photo to judge compatibility. This is not a promise that a particular third-party rack will fit.

Pushers: helpful for moving the wall

A pusher helps slide a built wall toward the center without moving each tile individually. Some racks include attached pushers; others use separate pieces. Before ordering, check whether the listing is for a rack alone, a pusher alone, or a combined set.

Consider how the pusher connects, whether it moves freely, and whether the combined rack and pusher will fit your storage bag. A matching color does not establish mechanical compatibility.

Mats: choose for your table and your tiles

A mat can soften tile noise and provide a comfortable playing surface. Look for a flat surface that lets tiles slide without snagging and a backing that stays in place. A busy print may look appealing in a photo but can make small tile details harder to pick out.

Measure your tabletop before choosing a mat. Leave enough usable room for four racks, the walls, discards, and each player’s card. Avoid a mat that hangs over the table edge. Read the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions: care instructions for one neoprene mat are not automatically safe for every fabric, backing, or printed finish.

Cards, dice, and storage: easy items to overlook

For play using National Mah Jongg League rules, each player should have the current official NMJL card. Buy it from the National Mah Jongg League or an authorized source. Our educational guides do not replace the official card. Two six-sided dice are also part of the table setup.

For storage, compare the inside dimensions of a case with your tiles and racks. Ask whether compartments, dividers, or a rack pouch are included. Photos of a styled table are not a packing list.

A five-question checklist before you buy

  1. What exactly comes in the box: tiles only, or accessories too?
  2. Are the tile measurements compatible with the rack and case?
  3. Does the rack price cover one rack or a set of four?
  4. Are pushers included, and do they fit the selected racks?
  5. Does the mat fit the table, and how should it be cleaned?

Do Mahjong Grove sets include racks and mats?

Check the individual product description rather than assuming accessories are included. Our tile listings may show styling props that are not part of the purchase. Browse our American Mahjong sets and confirm any missing measurements with us before buying accessories.
